Artworks: Elspeth Shannon

Elspeth graduated with a BFA (Hons) from Massey University. She regularly exhibits with Zimmerman Gallery in Palmerston North and has had work shown at Suite Gallery, Exhibition’s Gallery of Fine Art, and The NZ Portrait Gallery in Wellington, and various other places throughout NZ.  She makes art in response to different kinds of situations, and enjoys experimenting, questioning, and pushing self- imposed boundaries. She tries not limit herself to one way of thinking.  Her painting has increasingly become more about the process; with the image being secondary to the making, however her reference to, and love of nature, both flora and fauna, remains threaded throughout.

Elspeth’s recent work has seen a shift away from representational images to more organic abstraction. In this latest series, a reduced, almost monochromatic palette has allowed her focus to shift to considering aspects like weight, texture, balance, tension, strength, fragility and rhythm.
